Ultrasound Guided Lumbar Puncture

Performing a lumbar puncture can be extremely difficult when skeletal anatomy is not easily palpable. Ultrasound can be an invaluable tool to successfully identify skeletal anatomy and provide guidance for a successful lumbar puncture.

"Walking the Needle In" on Lumbar Puncture

As an acute care clinician it is critical to be able to perform lumbar punctures and there are many techniques to be successful. My favorite technique is to walk the needle in to the correct location using the inferior spinous process as a "guide." In this video I explain how to perform this technique which has helped me to be successful with performing lumbar punctures myself or guiding residents and students to a successful lumbar puncture.
